A Word of Explanation
Our websites have a terrible time with spam. You probably have the same problem. Once an email address is sent via the internet to anyone, that address can be captured by a spammer.
Some addresses are captured in transit. Others can be taken from a user's computer if he doesn't have a good firewall. However, the majority probably come from email "buddy lists" — when a user compiles email addresses of all his friends and sends them all a message at the same time. This latter example is particularly important because if you're on one "buddy list" you're probably on a network of "buddy lists" with users sending emails to everyone else's "buddy list."
We've taken the following steps to reduce the mountains of spam we receive: First, we never accept emails with multiple addressees. And second, we open only emails submitted via one of our contact forms.
There is no way to stop people from emailing directly to the addresses shown on the site. However, we can filter emailers utilizing the contact forms we provide on the site. Our website servers automatically check each email for MEMBER NAME and PASSWORD. If your email passes this inspection, the server lets your message through to our website. If you don't combine name and password, your message will be filtered as spam and deleted at the server before it reaches us.
We apologize if this is inconvenient for you. However, it's the only way we can cope with the spammers. We almost closed down our Naval-Aviator Network site twice in frustration, and we don't think it's American for a few pranksters or advertising pitchmen to ruin the internet for the rest of us.
