A Bit of Recruiting Nostalgia

Recently an old Naval Aviation recruiting booklet showed up at a yard sale. Nobody paid much attention to it until a long-retired Naval Aviator pounced. Without quibbling, he paid the yardsaler 50¢ and rushed home to enjoy his prize.

Turns out "Navy Wings of Gold" was printed for the Navy by the Government Printing Office in 1959. It's still in mint condition after 50 years, although the colors are a little faded. In easy conversational language, the 50-page booklet tells the story of Basic and Advanced Training as it existed at that time. Drawings and photographs depict students and instructors at various stages. The buyer even found a photo of his Primary Training instructor checking into NAS Pensacola as a Navcad! We're betting other old faces will be recognized, too.

Despite heavier emphasis on technology, radical differences in strategy, and changes in training locations, the training programs have not changed much. The program was meant to produce the best aviators in the world, and it continues to do so.
